Summary
In 1909, two explorers struggled to survive after they were abandoned while traveling to icy Denmark in Greenland.
In 1909, Danish explorer Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen organized a mission to the Shannon Island of East Greenland, where he traveled to retrieve a record of a mission in Denmark. His first attempt was unsuccessful and one of the crew lost a toe to freeze in the process, but on the voyage Mikkelsen found the dead Danish mission member with logs and maps showing the location of Karen built by His mission. The only volunteer to accompany Mikkelsen on his second attempt was an inexperienced engineer, Iver Iversen, while the rest of the crew was behind. Mikkelsen and Iversen lose their two walking dogs during their first few days and gradually sacrifice the remaining dogs to feed the remaining group. They then fought and killed the polar bear after three months, explorers discovered the island of Cairn, which has a record that does not confirm the existence of the Peary Channel, thus suggesting that Greenland is a single island and that the United States has no claims. In the Arctic. On their way back, Mikkelsen feared that they might not be able to survive, so they built another island about 200 miles from Shannon, where they set a record for a Danish mission. Mikkelsen and Iversen eventually return to Shannon Island to find out that the remaining crew have returned home, leaving them stranded. They were forced to spend two winters in the cabin with food and supplies as their crew struggled to climb rescue missions. During a long separation, the two men return to the Cardamom Mountains where they built and retrieve records. Meanwhile, their cabin was visited by rescuers who found no sign of them. Mikkelsen later agrees that his lover Naja Holm was with him while Iversen imagined meeting his grandfather. Mikkelsen almost killed Iversen with a rifle, and the two men almost lost their sanity before being rescued in 1912. Their evidence of the Danish mission led the United States to recognize Greenland as the only island belonging to Denmark. One episode shows that Mikkelsen married Naja a year later, that Iversen never landed in the Arctic again, and that the two men remained friends for life.
